Top Gun: Maverick isn’t just inspiring movies to do better at the box office. It’s also inspiring the creation of sequels in other franchises, including Legally Blonde 3.

Like Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon said she will make sure a new Legally Blonde movie lives up to its two predecessors — if and when it actually happens.

“I’m still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way,” Witherspoon recently told USA Today. “It’s just like Top Gun. They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it.”

Witherspoon added that she won’t settle for less, if and when another Legally Blonde movie comes to fruition.

“So definitely, [Top Gun: Maverick] gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people [back] then,” she said in the interview, which USA Today published in late July. “I feel like these characters are my friends, so I safeguard them. I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story.”

Legally Blonde 3 Is a Go … Right?

USA Today noted in its report that Legally Blonde 3 actually got the green light in 2018 and was set for release in May of this year. The creators reportedly tabled it due to “creative changes.”

In fact, not only did the movie get a release date, it also had a finished script. Mindy Kaling of The Office and The Mindy Project co-wrote the script and spoke about it to E! News in mid-February.

“There’s definitely gonna be a lot of new faces in the movie,” Kaling said. “Reflecting the world as it is now is something that’s really important to Reese, and so having there be like diversity is super, super important. You can definitely count on that.”

Kaling also mentioned that Jennifer Coolidge, who won an Emmy Award on Monday night, has a role in Legally Blonde 3. Coolidge won the prize for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in The White Lotus.

A second season of The White Lotus is due for release next year and will see Coolidge returning to her role as Tanya McQuoid.
