Rosie O’Donnell Is Unrecognizable In Rebooted ‘League of Their Own’ … And In Much Different Role

In case the world needed more Rosie O’Donnell … fear not. She’s back.

Well, sort of.

O’Donnell, 60, will have a small role in the Amazon Prime video show A League of Their Own, based on the 1990s grand slam of a movie that also starred Tom Hanks, Madonna and Gena Davis.

O’Donnell will again play the role of Vi, but now she’s no longer a player. Instead, she’s a bar owner who roots on the Rockford Peaches from the stands. Based on the publicity shot, O’Donnell (and Vi) are barely reckognizable.

“Like the popular Penny Marshall movie, the Rosie O’Donnell series is an ensemble comedy inspired by the real women who played in the All-American Girls Baseball League in the 1940s,” wrote Charlene Badasie of Giant Freakin Robot. “But this time A League of Their Own will take a deeper dive into themes the film only hinted at. This includes a story arc about how Black women were forbidden to play in the main team but found other ways to participate in the game. The show will also explore how many queer women were drawn to the league, a historical fact that the movie never acknowledges directly.”

The original A League of Their Own movie was directed by the late Penny Marshall of Laverne & Shirley fame. The TV series will debut on Prime on August 12.

“We talked a lot about the show being about these characters’ journey to finding their team,” creator Abbi Jacobson previously told Entertainment Weekly. “That joy of finding others that are like you is pretty special.”
