Scooby-Doo’s Velma Officially Identifies as Lesbian in New Halloween Special

It’s official, Velma Dinkley is officially part of the LGBTQ community! It was revealed during a new animated Scooby-Doo Halloween special, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!. The announcement comes years after long speculation about the character’s sexual orientation. Several online clips from the new film revealed that Velma develops a crush on another female character, a costume designer called Coco Diablo.

One clip was shared by Twitter showing Velma uttering her well-known trademark line, “Jinkies” after she meets Coco for the first time. She immediately appears to be smitten. Representatives of Warner Brothers Discovery Inc. have yet to make a comment on the revealing.

Velma Identifies as Lesbian

But, back in 2020, filmmaker James Gunn, who wrote Scobby Doo, Scooby-Doo 2:Monsters Unleashed, revealed he had attempted to make Velma gay but was shut down.

“I tried! In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel),” he tweeted at the time.

Gun went on to tell fans at that time that some of the implications could still be seen in several deleted scenes of the movie, and that only the original script would confirm her as a gay woman.

Back in 2020, during pride month, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated producer Tony Cervone had mildly confirmed her sexuality through an Instagram post. He posted a photo of Velma and Marcie in front of a rainbow background.  “I obviously don’t represent every version of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the key people that represents this one,” he noted. “We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer. There’s no new news here.”

Twitter Celebrates Scooby Doo’s Velma

As expected the internet blew up with several reactions to the new revelation. Several were ecstatic that she “finally got her happy ending.” One Twitter commented, “OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO.”

Another one noted, “The way I could actually cry about this like her finally being canon in the movies, not just in a mystery incorporated show, makes me so unbelievably happy :,).”

“ATTENTION ATTENTION ATTENTION!! If you look up Velma on @Googlethese pride and lesbian flags pop up 🥳🥳🥹🏳️‍🌈,” another one stated.

Seems to me like Velma has quite a good following.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
