But the more we learn about Carell, the more we find out about his versatility as an actor. For instance, he has shined in a serious role in The Morning Show, the Apple+ hit that also stars Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon.

Now, Carell is returning with a new FX drama called The Patient, in which he plays Alan Strauss, a therapist who has more than his own share of issues.

Distractify wrote that Carell’s character “finds himself held in captivity by an especially troubled patient named Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson), a serial killer who (unsurprisingly) also has his own set of issues. Forced to provide therapeutic help to his captor, Alan tries to find a way to escape before something horrible happens to someone else, or even himself.”

Sounds like a thriller, and it will undoubtedly be interesting to see Carell in such a role.

On the bright side, his fans won’t have to wait very long to check it out. The Patient is slated to premiere on Tuesday, Aug. 30. It will stream exclusively on Hulu.

So far, Carell is receiving positive reviews, including one from Ben Travers of IndieWire.

“Similar to the show itself, Carell’s turn isn’t loud or attention-seeking; it’s thoughtful and lived-in,” Travers wrote. “By the end, your satisfaction with the resolution may vary, but your investment in another father-son story — steered by a man who’s been through a few — is rewarded with an illuminating portrait of (at least) two lives. And isn’t that what we all seek from therapy? A little illumination?”
