One of Jason Segel’s Ex-Girlfriends Inspired a Movie Script
Jason Segel has been romantically linked to many beautiful women and most of them follow his same line of work. The 43-year-old seems to have a certain charm about him that attracts actresses like bees to honey. But he’s also admitted to not being perfect… although he certainly knows how to make the best of situations! One perfect example is a breakup he lived through almost 20 years ago. It was actually the inspiration for Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He wrote and starred in the outrageous comedy, which also featured Kristen Bell and Paul Rudd.
While speaking on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Segel responded to O’Brien’s admission that Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a cult favorite of his and his wife’s.
“That movie’s really honest, I think that that’s why,” Segel said. “I wasn’t trying to be funny, as crazy as that sounds…I got dumped while I was naked and so I put that into a movie.”
“I was dating somebody, and it was amazing; I was like, super in love,” Segel began. “And they had to go away for a little while and they came back and called me from the airport and said, ‘Hey, can I come over?’ And as an adolescent young man, I thought that meant like, ‘we’ve been apart, I need to have sex.’”
“And I had decided that the way to really kick of this ‘sex’ was that I was waiting on the couch totally naked. Like, posed, like comedically posed,” Segel continued, as he “viscerally” remembered the day. “‘Burt Reynolds’…So, she walked in and there I am laying. And I said, ‘I’ve got a surprise for you.’ And then she said, ‘We need to talk.’”
He had no idea that she was thinking something completely different.
“I’m fairly confident that it’s not the end of the sentence. That ‘we need to talk’ is ‘this sex is going to be wonderful,’” Segel says as the entire table busts up into laughter. “And so, this breakup starts and I’m naked.”
At this point, Segel digs deep, as if he’s realizing something important about himself.
“I think this is like, maybe the problem,” he admits. “I’m thinking like, ‘This is so funny. This is going to be amazing when I write it.’ As it’s happening… It was absurd.”
It gets better.
Adorably, Jason Segel then let on that there was another hilarious moment in this strange and tragic turn of events. He told the girl that he needed to get dressed. Then he proceeded to spend over 25 minutes in his room, changing his outfit over and over. In his state of disbelief, he still needed to find the appropriate “breakup outfit.” He said he wrote it in the original Forgetting Sarah Marshall screenplay, but it was too long to include.
“I’m taking shirts off and throwing them on the ground,” Segel says as he emphatically goes through the motions. “And then trying pants on that don’t quite fit right. I came out in a button-up blue shirt and khaki pants. And then I said, ‘I’m wearing your favorite outfit.’”
What a scene and what a memory. Of course, we all want to know who the lady was who inspired the comedy classic? Perhaps it was Linda Cardellini?
Linda Cardellini May Have Been Segel’s Inspiration for Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Linda Cardellini and Jason Segel co-starred in the comedy-drama TV show Freaks and Geeks from 1999 to 2000. She played Lindsay Weir and he played Nick Andopolis, two teens whose platonic relationship eventually leads to romance. After the show was abruptly canceled, Segel and Cardellini dated in real-life. They reportedly dated from 2001 to 2007 and there are abundant rumors that it was indeed Cardellini who inspired Segel to write Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
The New York Times published a piece about Segel in 2008, citing the naked breakup incident as something that had occurred “a few years ago.” The ex-girlfriend was unnamed, but Segel reiterated that she’d at least partially inspired his epic comedy, which was released the same week as the article. A few years prior to 2008 would indeed put Jason Segel in the age range of 24. However, it would also imply that he didn’t actually date Linda Cardellini until 2007. There isn’t much out on the internet regarding their relationship. But if it did end when Segel was 24 — around 2004 — that would have been in the very early days of social media. So, it makes sense that the details are foggy. Perhaps that’s better for everyone.
Chloë Sevigny
Jason Segel was very briefly linked to actress Chloë Sevigny in September 2009. The two were spotted together at the HBO Emmy Party in West Hollywood. They allegedly ate chocolates, drank champagne, and then went outside. Once outside, they smoked cigarettes and were seen “kissing and standing arm in arm” as they waited for a valet, according to Page Six. Then they left together.
But that seems to be the only sighting of the pair, so it’s not clear if it was a one-night thing or something a little more serious. According to Dahvi Shira of Oh No They Didn’t, the pair were “spotted kissing in a corner of the party away from the main bar area,” and then “they stopped locking lips once they realized people were watching them.” So maybe it was just a fling and they never wanted to be thought of as an item.
Michelle Williams
Jason Segel and Michelle Williams were internet official in 2012. They dated for about one year. A source told People that they met through actress Busy Philipps, who was Segel’s former co-star on Freaks and Geeks and Williams’ best friend.
Per US Weekly, the couple was first spotted dining at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont in late February 2012. A month later, they were seen leaving dinner at Brooklyn restaurant Frankie’s Spuntino. A witness saw Segel put his arm around Williams, and they were laughing and “seemed very relaxed.” Another source told US that the couple was “smitten and very serious.” Segel was also seen hanging out with Williams’ then 6-year-old daughter, Matilda, which is always a good sign when you’re in love with a single parent.
According to People, Segel was continuously seen at Williams’ apartment in Brooklyn in the fall of 2012. But by February 2013, they split, allegedly due to the long-distance relationship. Segel’s primary residence at the time was Los Angeles while Williams resided in New York.
Bojana Novakovic
Serbian-born Australian actress Bojana Novakovic and Jason Segel were first spotted at The Grove mall in Los Angeles in June 2013. According to a 2010 interview (per E! News), Novakovic claimed that she wasn’t interested in dating other actors. It seems that she changed her mind, at least briefly! They broke up within less than half a year of dating, because by December 2013, Segel had another leading lady.
Alexis Mixter
After a lengthy run with dating actress after actress, Jason Segel found a new kind of love. His relationship with artist Alexis Mixter has been his longest, as far as is publicly known. The couple began dating in December 2013 but kept their relationship “lowkey” for a few years. Mixter accompanied Segel on the red carpet in 2016 at one of Sean Penn’s fundraisers.
Jason Segel doesn’t use much social media, preferring to veer clear of Instagram and Facebook in favor of Twitter. But Mixter is an avid Instagram user. On December 20, 2017, she commemorated her and Segel’s 4th anniversary as a couple. She wrote a lengthy and heartfelt caption alongside a photo of her boyfriend sitting on a leather couch and appearing to be in deep thought.
“Today, four years ago, I grudgingly and with extreme reluctance got in my car and drove to meet you. I couldn’t see how we’d possibly click the way we did. But we did. It has been the absolute best four years of my life since, not because it’s all been easy and smooth but because it’s all been worth it. The kind of worth it that’s soul changing,” wrote the artist. “It’s been full of love, growth and learning. Somewhere in the insane fabric of the universe I feel there is a thread that ties us together and I’m so grateful for it. Thank you for having my back, for loving me in a way I never dreamed possible and making me laugh while encouraging me to dream. You are my partner and I love you.”
Mixter Announced Her Breakup with Segel on Social Media
The pair continued to date for another 4 years but after 8 years, they called it quits. Again, because Segel doesn’t share much online about his love life (perhaps he prefers to transform it into cinema and story), it was Mixter who broke the news.
“This is a photo of two best friends,” Mixter wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post in April 2021. The caption (available via People) accompanied a photo of Segel and her holding their heads close together and smiling into the camera. “This guy and I have shared so much life together. Changed each other at a soul deep level. All for the better. The depth of our bond was something I could never have anticipated.”
“I’ve never spent so much time with another person, grown so much alongside someone else, laughed so much, cried so much, shared so much. It is odd to write about the end of a relationship, especially when the friendship that still exists is so full of life,” she continued. “But change happens and we made the decision quite a while ago to let ourselves grow away from what our relationship had been and into what it was becoming.”
She Called Him Her “Best Friend”
Mixter explained that it was “a strange feeling” publicly announcing a breakup but also assured that she and Segel had strived to keep their private life private and would continue to do so. She also praised Segel for being her best friend and thanked him for coming into her life.
“Thank you J for being my best friend,” Mixter wrote. “The person who shares all my favorite jokes, sees who I really am and all I want to be, loves me unconditionally and makes me always strive to be bigger and better than I was yesterday. I will never stop cheering you on with every cell of my body. I will never stop loving you unconditionally.”
After Alexis Mixter, it seems that Jason Segel has taken an extensive break from the dating scene. There haven’t been any confirmed sightings or reports of new ladies in his life since April of 2021. Hopefully, he meets the woman of his dreams. And then we’d like to watch a movie about it, please!
