‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘1883’ Renewed for Season 2 – With a Twist

1883 season 2 has officially been renewed and will now focus on the legendary lawman Bass Reeves.

Selma star David Oyelowo will star in 1883: The Bass Reeves Story – which will serve as season 2 of the 1883 series.

The Yellowstone prequel’s first season followed James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) as they lead their family and a group of various migrants along the rough terrain of the American West toward Oregon. Created by Hell or High Water writer Taylor Sheridan, 1883 was initially intended to conclude following its final episode.

According to TVLine, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story will center around the legendary figure “known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, and also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.”

Per the show’s official description, the 1883 spinoff serves as a prequel to Yellowstone, which tells the story of “the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park.”

Bass Reeves – the man and historical figure – was portrayed back in November by Delroy Lindo in the popular Netflix western film, The Harder They Fall. Before that, Reeves’ life and legacy were explored in the Emmy-winning HBO series Watchmen, starring Regina King, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Louis Gossett Jr. and Jean Smart.
