Netflix announced in February 2021 that the movie would star Kunis as the central character in the book of the same name. She is also serving as one of the producers of Luckiest Girl Alive.

Netflix’s website provides a synopsis of the drama.

Luckiest Girl Alive centers on Ani FaNelli [played by Mila Kunis], a sharp-tongued New Yorker who appears to have it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe, and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon,” the statement said. “But when the director of a crime documentary invites her to tell her side of the shocking incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Brentley School, Ani is forced to confront a dark truth that threatens to unravel her meticulously crafted life.”

Mila Kunis: ‘Alive’ And Thriving

Luckiest Girl Alive became a bestselling novel in 2015, racking up more than 1 million copies sold. Its author, Jessica Knoll, is adapting the screenplay for the Netflix film, according to the streaming service’s statement.

Meanwhile, TV vet Mike Barker will sit in the director’s seat. His credits include helming The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo, and the pilot for Netflix’s wildly popular new series The Sandman.

The movie is currently in post-production. It will screen in theaters for a limited run starting September 30, then debut on Netflix a week later.

Mila Kunis, who married Ashton Kutcher in 2015, is one of the most prolific actors around. Her lengthy résumé includes an astounding 34 films since 1996.

She was also one of the primary cast members in TV’s That ‘70s Show from 1998 to 2006. Kunis also continues to voice Meg Griffin on Family Guy, a gig she started way back in 1999.
