Most every person of a certain age knows, for a fact, that John Mayer wrote the hit song ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’ about Jennifer Love Hewitt.

The pair only dated for a few months — June to August back in 2002 — and it was while Mayer was on a run of celebrity relationships. Apparently the theory that it was about the highest profile “It Girl” of the decade, is a lie. It isn’t about any of his famous ex’s.
Or at least it is the story that Mayer is now telling.
“That was about my first girlfriend,” Mayer said on the latest episode of Call Her Daddy. “That was about the feeling, which I think was already sort of nostalgic… I was 21 when I wrote that song and I was nostalgic for being 16.”
It’s your lie, John, tell it how you want.
I simply do not believe that. That song was about Jennifer Love Hewitt. Everything in the world after Can’t Hardly Wait in 1998 through The Truth About Love in 2005 was about Jennifer Love Hewitt. His dating her in 2002 means the song is about her.
Mayer continued to make sure he dispelled the theory directly. He is claiming that the story just gained a groundswell and became accepted as truth.
“No, that’s one of those things where people just sort of formed that idea,” he said. “It gets reinforced over the years, no, no, no. I had never met a celebrity when I wrote that song.”
This is now going to be the story of record, because AmericanSongwriter.com has covered it but that does not mean it has to be culturally accepted. Congrats to all the girls in the Fairfield Warde High School Classes of 1992-1996 who can now claim that at 16, they inspired John Mayer. It is a story that they can have over any of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Cameron Diaz, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Rashida Jones, or the other celebrity relationships Mayer has had.
