“It is with deep regret that Robbie Coltrane has to withdraw from the July Comic Con due to his continuing ill health. He is very sorry to disappoint his fans and supporters and hopes very much to appear at another Showmasters event when his health permits. Obviously, we are incredibly disappointed that Robbie is not able to attend and so sad to hear of his ill health. Both ourselves and Robbie we’re looking forward to him being at the show and we wish him the best. We will work to see if we can get Robbie to a future event, but in the meantime, vouchers will automatically be issued to any ticket holders for Robbie.”

Robbie Coltrane spoke about his battle with severe osteoarthritis back in 2016 with The Daily Star. “I’m in constant pain all day,” he said. “I had an exploratory operation and they discovered I had no cartilage left in one of my knees. It’s completely disintegrated. And they told me it’s osteoarthritis. People are probably wondering why I’m hobbling about in the way I am and that is why.”

His condition has gotten much worse over the years. In March 2019, the star was spotted in a wheelchair at the launch Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike ride in Universal Studios, Orlando.

A source told The Sun around the same time that Robbie was awaiting knee surgery and was in severe pain every day. The same source also said that Robbie would be “leaping around like an elf” post-operation.

It’s been noted that it’s very difficult for fans to see their beloved actor in such dire straits. After all, we’re all used to seeing Hagrid looming tall and strong over his Hogwarts friends.

The London Film & Comic Con is set for July -10. In the meantime, let’s send some good thoughts Robbie Coltrane’s way.
