This Dutton Family Tree Will Help Navigate ‘1883’, ‘1923’, and ‘Yellowstone’ Expansion

At the risk of sounding sacrilegious, the expansion of the Yellowstone Universe with new hits 1883 and, now, 1923, is creating a decidedly “Book of Genesis” vibe to tracking who begat whom.

The forerunner to the series is, of course, Yellowstone. Peacock, via the Paramount Network, scored a massive hit almost immediately when the show was released in the summer of 2018. As if you do not know, Kevin Coster, as John Dutton III, is an uncompromising, generational ranch operator that navigates all of the corruption, posturing and problems of the modern world.

1883 was spun-off after the success and told the story of the original Duttons. It had a compelling cast led by Tim McGraw as patriarch, James Dutton. The 10-episode run introduced audiences to the toughness of the family. McGraw led the family from Tennessee to Fort Worth, and then on a wagon trail to Oregon. The death of his daughter, Elsa, stops the family in its tracks while in Montana, where they eventually set up the ranch. Most of 1883 is told from Elsa’s perspective and actress Isabel May deserved more critical credit for her role. She was magnificent in her toughness and tenderness.

So far, 1923, is following the next generation of Dutton’s. It stars Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton — brother to John — and Helen Mira, as his wife Cara. The central characters took over the ranch in the early 1900s and without children of their own, raise James’ as their own. 1923 is also going to tell the tale of western expansion, as well as the tales of hardship through prohibition and The Great Depression.

Tracking the weaving family tree can be difficult.

Thanks to the good people at ELLE Magazine there is now a pretty concise lineage tracker. Instead of explaining it, here it is:

Graphic is from ELLE. They also breakdown the characters in detail, here.

Yellowstone is not stopping there.

This is only a temporary solution to the family tree learning. There is another spinoff planned with 6666 being developed. It is going to be set in present-day and located back in Texas on the “Four Sixes Ranch.”

Additionally, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story is being developed that will follow the titular character but may also introduce — or expand — on what was set into motion during that initial run of the 1883 show.
