Forest Gump director Robert Zemeckis directs the film, which co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John, and Luke Evans as the Coachman. The movie also features a new character, Sofia the Seagull, played by Lorraine Bracco.

They’re all featured in the new teaser trailer, which debuted on Tuesday’s edition of Good Morning America.

Evans says that the Coachman “thankfully” looks “nothing like the character from the animation” and that the character is expanded for the new version of the movie.

“Things are not going to be the same as they were in the animation. The storyline is very, very similar, but there were some characters that [Zemeckis] was able to dramatically enhance, and the Coachman is one of those,” Evans said. “I get to use all of my musical theater experience and skills in this character. I can’t tell you too much because I want it to be a surprise, but there are some really wonderful gifts that he gave me as an actor with the character.”

“You see a coachman in many different ways,” he continued. “I don’t want to give away anymore than that. But he isn’t just the average human being, if that means anything to you. He’s a very unusual creature. He’s rather terrifying. If you think Gaston is scary, wait until you meet the Coachman!”

Even though this Pinocchio is a live-action film, its fantastical storybook characters have all been rendered more or less like the versions of their classic Disney cartoon counterparts.

And while the teaser trailer is only a very small sample, it certainly is a strong indication that the movie will be able to recreate at least some of the original animated feature’s magic.

The original, animated classic Pinocchio debuted in 1940 and is streaming now on Disney+.
