The founder of a website that works to expose people who lie about their military service has his sights set on a Kansas man who went on TV, claiming to have served.

Back in July, local veterans were guarding an Olathe, KS, military recruiting office after an attack in Tennessee. Shawn Culbertson presented himself as a Special Ops soldier who had been wounded in combat. The Guardian of Valor site is investigating his claims.

Culbertson says he’s the CEO of a company called Op6. Other veterans grew suspicious of his claims. Local TV station, KCTV began digging into his background. Culbertson was in the military but, apparently, not at the rank or position he claimed.

KCTV discovered Culbertson served as an Army private for three years, never deployed, and was administratively discharged after being AWOL for three months. Culbertson also lied about receiving numerous medals from the Army and he lied about education.

It does appear, however, that he wanted to make a difference in his community. Culbertson repaired a dying veteran’s home for the man’s wife.

Anthony Anderson, founder of the Guardian of Valor website, told KCTV that Culbertson should just be proud of his service.

“You did what only five percent of America has ever done. And that’s served his nation. You didn’t make it all the way through but at least you tried,” he said.
