A suspected con man accused of posing as a wounded veteran is in police custody after blowing his own cover.

42-year-old Jeremy Wilson parked his rented BMW in a New York City garage on Dec. 30. He allegedly pretended to be an injured veteran as part of his “scheme” to rent the car, police said.

New York police had been alerted the car was fraudulently rented in the Boston area. When they saw it in their jurisdiction, they impounded it and left a note for the driver.

That’s when Wilson called the detective’s number on the note to set up a time to get the car back.

Police arrested him, Monday, when he arrived to get the car. A search of Wilson’s home the next day turned up military uniforms, computers, cash, passports and items emblazoned with Harvard and MIT logos.

Wilson now faces two counts of grand larceny and one count each of possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a forged instrument.
