Kevin Corrinet is a war veteran and former Army captain who is using his military skills to help children stay in shape.

Corrinet teaches a physical education class at a middle school in Hawthorne, Calif. And, this is no phone-it-in kind of class either. Corrinet serves as a drill sergeant, pushing the students through military-like workouts that he calls Wiseburn CrossFit.

“Today it was running, air squats, pushups, sit-ups and box jumps,” Corrinet told KABC.

The program is in its third year and hundreds of students have participated. Corrinet hopes students will develop an appreciation for the military by participating in the drills that soldiers do during training.

“I love bringing my military experience into this program as much as possible. We run as classes similar to a platoon formation that we would see in the army. So, I assign students platoon leaders, squad leaders,” Corrinet said.

School officials say the program is working so well that plans are in the works to expand it.
