The Army announced that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will not be detained while he awaits legal proceedings from his charges of desertion. The charges result from Bergdahl’s decision to leave his Army base in Afghanistan in 2009. He was then captured by the Taliban and spent five years in captivity. President Obama’s decision to trade five Taliban prisoners for Bowe Bergdahl was immediately criticized, with the loudest outcry coming from the military community.
So far, Bergdahl has been allowed to leave the base so long as he is accompanied by two soldiers. He has been performing administrative duties since his return to the United States at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Bergdahl will not be placed under arrest or any kind of detention now, and can freely leave the base if he chooses to.
