The search for a Marine who walked away from his military base in New Jersey before Christmas has come to a bleak end. The body of 28-year-old Marine Sgt. Tristan Clinger was reportedly found about 8 miles from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, last weekend.

Clinger’s wife said her husband seemed distraught and was reluctant to reach out for help. He reportedly left their home after she tried to get him help.

“When you’re in the military, like he felt that he couldn’t get help because he felt that if he tried to get help, they would kick him out, and he would lose his job,” his wife told WTXF. “And he just saw his life crumbling from that point, so he was afraid to get help.”

A five-year veteran of the Marine Corps, Clinger was originally from Lexington, Ky.

No additional information about Clinger’s death has been released, but his final Facebook post reportedly referenced an “empty feeling.”

Clinger is survived by his wife, Rachel, and three young children.
