Navy veteran Daryl Vande Hoef served the country through three tours of duty on the USS Enterprise during Vietnam. He kept on serving others as a shuttle driver for veterans. That was, until his vehicle was totaled in a crash.
“After my car wreck, I started emptying garbage at the (VA) helping veterans. I was there every day,” he told KDVR.
Vande Hoef won’t be on trash duty anymore, thanks to Geico and the Caliber Collision body shop in Boulder, Colo. The National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides Program fixes damaged cars for people in need.
“We take a car, we refurbish it. Get it back up to running condition and we’ll go out and vet a veteran or somebody in need and donate the vehicle to them,” said Tim Bator, regional manager for Caliber Collision.
Vande Hoef received his new ride this week.
