A World War II veteran got a celebration some 80 years in the making, this week.
92-year-old Thomas Williams of Central Bridge, N.Y., received his war medals, Tuesday, including the Bronze Star.
Williams was just 19 when he enlisted in the Army. His family said he’d mention his medals but didn’t go into great detail about his World War II service. As it turns out, he was part of the 100th Infantry Division, which saw some of the fiercest fighting during the war.
Williams’ daughter and son-in-law reached out to their local congressman for help securing the medals. He finally received the hardware this week, but the Bronze Star was a surprise. Williams was awarded that medal because of witness accounts of his bravery in combat.
