On Monday, Jan. 9, Ty Pozzobon, 2016 Canadian Championship Bull Rider and four-time PBR World Champion finalist, died unexpectedly at his home near Merritt, British Columbia at the age of 25, according to the “Calgary Sun.” He was in Canada recovering from a hand injury he received prior to the world finals.

While no cause has been announced at this point, the B.C. coroner does not suspect foul play. In a press release, Ty’s mother, Leanne, did suggest that previous head injuries may have been a possible cause. She said, “It’s important that people know about the implications of head injuries as a result of concussions.” His father, Luke, also added, “He did not suffer.”
Ty began his rodeo career at a young age, starting professional competitions at the age of 16, according to CBC News. He finished fourth in the PBR finals in Las Vegas in November. In addition to his parents, Ty is survived by his young wife, Jayd.

While competitive cowboys around the world are saddened by the news of Ty’s death, it does stir up memories of other cowboys who were lost in the prime of their lives and their careers, including the late Lane Frost. Lane also died at the age of 25 after being gored by a bull at the iconic Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1989. The movie, “8 Seconds,” starring Luke Perry, chronicles his life and his untimely passing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Ty’s family and the rodeo community.
