But then he fell in love.
These days, Dale is being more than open about his plans to have a family with wife Amy and his drive to become a daddy, just like his own father Dale Earnhardt.

“We’d love to have a family,” the 42-year-old told Jeff Gordon in a recent interview. “I know it’s a lot of work and certainly changes your life completely. But we’d love to have a family — and I think we’ll be awesome parents.”
“We’re gonna try our best,” Amy said quickly, gazing over at Dale.

Dale Jr. has some big shoes to fill, as his dad was one of the best in his eyes.
“Dad did stuff like this all the time,” Dale Jr. said in a March 2 tweet when a fan asked about the many random acts of kindness his dad did, like paving a church parking lot. “He loved to help folks but didn’t like making any noise about it.”
