While Elvis had dozens of career songs, “Heartbreak Hotel” was his first single on his new record label RCA Victor. Believe it or not, it was recorded in his first session at RCA’s first permanent recording studio in Nashville and featured the legendary Chet Atkins on guitar.

Being Elvis and the band’s first session, RCA was anxious to recreate the “slapback” echo effect you could hear on their records from the legendary Sun Studios. In order to achieve this, Chet and the sound engineer, Bob Farris, created a psuedo “echo chamber” by going into the hallway and setting up a speaker at one end and a microphone at the other. They then recorded the echo live, creating that infamous sound you hear.

“Heartbreak Hotel” went to No. 1 on the Billboard Country and Western charts on March 17, 1956. It would go on to become certified double platinum and in 1995, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
