Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s oldest daughter, Gracie, dipped her toe in the family business without her parents even knowing about it.

As a teenager, Gracie taught herself to play guitar and formed a band with some friends. They even booked a few shows, but Tim and Faith didn’t know about any of this until it was all over.

Faith goes on to tell “New Beauty” all three of their daughters are full of surprises. She says, “I can’t even guess who is going to do what.”

All of Tim and Faith’s daughters can sing, so it’s only natural at least one of them would follow in their parents’ footsteps. That brings up some complicated emotions in Faith.

She explains, “As a parent, you don’t want to stand in the way of their dreams. It’s been one of the most difficult things for me as a mom — especially as a mom of all girls. You want to protect them; you want to make sure they aren’t disappointed.”

As her babies grow up, Faith has to remind herself how she looked at the world as an eager 19-year-old ready to set out on her own.

She adds, “Sometimes, it’s better to let your children go through things on their own and let them experience it instead of saying, ‘Don’t do it this way, or you must do it this way.’”

Just because they have famous parents doesn’t mean the path to success will be easy for the McGraw girls. Tim and Faith both think it’s very important for their daughters to develop a strong work ethic.

“The one thing we stress is that you don’t get things handed to you on a silver platter — you have to work for the things you want,” Faith says. “They know it takes hard work. You don’t just arrive.”

Tim and Faith are still working hard on their careers. They’ll launch their new Soul2Soul World Tour on April 7 in New Orleans just days after performing their new duet, “Speak to a Girl,” on the 52nd Annual ACM Awards April 2 on CBS.
