At least 14 people, including three children, were shot in a drive-by shooting on Halloween night at a busy corner in Chicago. People were gathered for a vigil when two people traveling in a dark SUV opened fire. The incident occurred at the corner of California Avenue and Polk Street around 9:30 at night before the vehicle drove away. Investigators are now currently trying to find the shooters.

A 15th person, a woman, suffered scrapes when the vehicle struck her as she tried to run away from the site. A 3-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl, and a 13-year-old boy were among the children shot. According to authorities, gunshot victims were being treated at several hospitals. Some of their conditions were described as critical for two, good for six, serious for five, and unknown for one.

Police stated that the vigil was unrelated to the shooting but haven’t given any further details on the motive. “There may have also been others gathered for other various reasons,” Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown stated. “It’s a very, you know, common corner where people congregate and have different meetings and gatherings.”

According to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 500 mass shootings in the United States this year alone. As of Tuesday, the count was 573 with an average of more than 1.8 mass shootings every single day. A mass shooting is defined as one in which at least four people are shot and excludes the shooter.
That same day, another shooting occurred where a person killed several and injured six others. This occurred at a Halloween party located in the home in Kansas City Kansas. There were as many as 100 high school students at the home when the gunfire began.
