Most people have learned that if they’re in trouble, they should call 911.

Unfortunately for Latina Verneta Herring, 35, and her son Branden Christian, 8, that call did not save them from Herring’s boyfriend, Allen Dion Cashe, 31.

The Florida couple fought over keys in front of a Wawa gas station in March. 911 was called in early morning hours to respond to the fight. The emergency line was called a second time about 20 minutes later from Herring’s house. Police responded to both calls.

Cashe was briefly handcuffed during the second call but then released. Police did so after deciding that the matter was “civil.”

After the officers left the scene for the second time, Cashe returned to Herring’s house, where he fatally shot her and one of her sons with an AK-47. He also wounded her father Bertis Gerard Herring Jr, 60, her other son Brendon Christian, 7, and two bystanders, ages 43 and 18.

Released footage from Sanford police body cameras show the officers’ interactions with the couple at the gas station and later again at Herring’s home.

The officers in the footage can be heard discussing the multiple 911 calls.

“She’s making false accusations. It’s the second time she’s done it,” one officer criticized.

“We’re going to handle it, ma’am, just stop calling 911 and making accusations that you don’t know about,” an officer told Herring.

“I think he’s calling because he’s afraid he’s going to do something to her,” another officer said, suggesting that Cashe was the one to contact the emergency line the second time.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Police Chief Cecil E. Smith placed blame on Cashe alone. “The cause of this was Mr. Cashe’s making the decision to recklessly shoot and harm these individuals,” he said.

Earlier in the week, Cashe was charged with the murder of Herring and her oldest son, as well as the attempted murder of the other four people who were shot.
