Dr. David Dao, the 69-year-old medical professional who was forcibly removed from a United Airlines flight this week, has a peculiar backstory that is just now coming to light. According to TMZ, Dr. Dao had his medical license suspended over a decade ago, after he was charged with nearly 100 felony drug counts.

“Dr. Dao was also convicted on 6 felony counts of obtaining drugs by fraud and deceit and in 2005 was given 5 years probation,” TMZ reported on Tuesday.

From 2005-2015, Dao’s licensed was suspended in Kentucky, where he had previously practiced medicine. It was reinstated with a heaping amount of restrictions in 2015. Dr. Dao is currently allowed to work in internal medicine, one day a week.

In between his time as a licensed doctor in Kentucky, Dao had success as a professional poker player.

On Sunday, Dao was injured after he was asked to give up his seat on a United Airlines flight. Viral video of the incident shows Dao being physically removed from his seat and injuring his mouth.
