Man gets sweet revenge on Buzzfeed before his lawsuit against them is even decided

A Russian businessman suing Buzzfeed for defamation didn’t want to wait until the judgment to extract a bit of justice.

In documents obtained and posted by Law Newz, Russian businessman Aleksej Gubarev says defendents Buzzfeed, Inc., and Buzzfeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith defamed him and his companies (XBT Holdings, S.A. and Webzilla, Inc.) when they published the infamous “Trump Dossier” in January 2017, and he’s suing for damages.

Gubarev’s lawsuit says the dossier makes false, damaging statements about him and his companies, including that Gubarev was recruited by Russian intelligence to “transmit viruses, plant bugs, steal data, and conduct ‘altering operations.'” Only some of the information in the dossier has been confirmed by American intelligence.

The filing itself addresses a motion by Buzzfeed to dismiss the case or move it to New York. Gubarev clearly wasn’t having it. He and his legal team named their response “SIX WAYS BUZZFEED HAS MISLED THE COURT (NUMBER TWO WILL AMAZE YOU) … AND A PICTURE OF A KITTEN.”

Though they did not write their filing like a listicle, the appendix does, indeed, include a picture of a kitten.

In an appearance on CNN when the dossier was released, Smith said “We’re proud we published it […] It was the right thing to do.”
