In a new column in Sports Illustrated, writer Michael Rosenberg examines whether NFL free agent Colin Kaepernick is still a valuable football player. Kaepernick has had trouble finding a contract after a season in which he started a movement across sports to sit out the national anthem.

Kaepernick’s silent protest was meant to raise awareness about civil unrest and racial injustice across the United States. For his piece, Rosenberg spoke to two of Kaepernick’s former coaches, both of whom believe he can still play football at a high level. Former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh believe that what Kaepernick has done to raise awareness about civic problems across the country is heroic.

“For Colin, and what Colin’s doing and has been doing, when you really stop and listen and know where Colin is coming from […] he’s trying to do this for his future kids, for my kids, for all of our kids. He’s a special person and a hero, in my opinion.”

Harbaugh believes that Kaepernick is still among the top quarterbacks in the world and deserves a chance to play.

“Do I think he is one of the top 64 quarterbacks in the world? There is no question. Does he have the ability to play quarterback on a winning team in the NFL? There is no question.”
