Another senseless murder.
Singer and Internet celebrity Qandeel Baloch died Friday night in what news outlets describe as an honor killing committed by her brother.
Baloch’s strong views on women’s issues reportedly sparked debate in Pakistan. Baloch often raised the question of whether choosing to defy family and societal norms symbolized women’s empowerment or was cheap narcissism, according to the BBC.
This same quality was the characteristic that allegedly brought Baloch fame and notoriety.
“No matter how many times I will be pushed down, I am a fighter, I will bounce back…” she wrote in a throwback Facebook post.
The Internet celebrity’s actions were, at times, met some pushback.
“A girl who decides to publish her naked pics for sake of publicity…. what her brother is sppose (sic) to do?” asked one Islamabad-based Twitter user.
Other social media reactions to Baloch’s death were more on the side of outrage and sadness.
“#QandeelBaloch was a Pakistani woman and deserved the right to life. No ifs, no buts. Punjab government must hold murderer accountable.” read one statement on Twitter.
Nafisa Shah, wrote “A social media star who exposed social hypocrisy is murdered by a family vigilante created by a skewed law. Condemnable.”
According to Pakistani law-enforcement, officials are searching for Baloch’s brother in connection to Baloch’s murder. He reportedly opposed her social-media use claiming it dishonored his family’s name.
