Ambassador John Bolton appeared on Fox News over the weekend and claimed that alleged Russian hacks meant to disadvantage the Hillary Clinton campaign may have been a “false flag” by the Obama administration.

It is not at all clear to me just viewing this from the outside, that this hacking into the DNC and the RNC computers was not a false-flag operation. Let’s remember what FBI Director James Comey said dealing with Hillary’s home brew server. He said we found no direct evidence of foreign intelligence service penetration. But given the nature of this, we didn’t expect to. Meaning a really sophisticated foreign intelligence service would not leave any cyber fingerprints — and yet people say they did leave cyber fingerprints in the hacks regarding our elections. So the question that has to be asked is, why did the Russians run their smart intelligence service against Hillary’s server, but their dumb intelligence services against the election?
A “false flag” is a term for an attack committed by a group or government in a way that makes it appear it was carried out by a different group or government. Conspiracy theorists have alleged that everything from the 9/11 attacks to the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando last summer were false flag attacks committed by the U.S. government and blamed on others.
While most allegations of false flags are little more than crazy conspiracy theories, false flag attacks have actually taken place in the past.

Fox anchor Eric Shawn told Bolton these were serious allegations and asked him for evidence. Bolton didn’t provide any. That’s because there is no credible evidence to show that the CIA or any other intelligence agency was responsible for the hacking that took place.
This isn’t the first crazy thing Bolton has said. In 2010, he suggested that Israel should nuke Iran in order to stop the Iranians from getting a nuclear weapon. Bolton is so eager for war that he said the United States should bomb Iran in a 2015 op-ed for the New York Times. Much to Bolton’s disappointment, the U.S. and other countries reached a diplomatic deal with Iran to curtail its nuclear program.
Bolton was appointed U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in 2005 in a recess appointment by then-president George W. Bush. He left the post in 2006 after Democrats took control of Congress and signaled they would oppose him indefinitely.

Bolton currently remains under consideration for a high-level diplomatic position in the incoming Donald Trump administration. Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Rand Paul has declared his opposition to Bolton, saying he would be “an automatic no” if Bolton is appointed. Republicans only have a 10-9 advantage on the committee, and it is unlikely any Democrats will back him.
President-elect Trump should take the hint and take Bolton out of the running for a cabinet post. The last thing America needs is a conspiracy theorist as one of its top diplomats.
