We’re learning more about the varied guests that Pope Francis entertained during his visit to the U.S. last week. Controversial Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis –who opposes same-sex marriages—held audience with the pontiff in Washington, but, so did a same-sex couple.

CNN exclusively reports Pope Francis met with a longtime friend from Argentina who has been in a same-sex relationship for nearly 20 years. Yayo Grassi and his partner, Iwan, met the pope at the Vatican Embassy Sept. 23. Pope Francis scheduled the meeting himself, emailing Grassi weeks before his trip to arrange the meeting.

Grassi declined to share details about the brief meeting with the pope but he says the two hugged and telling CNN the pontiff has “never been judgmental” about his sexuality.

Pope Francis taught Grassi at Inmaculada Concepcion high school in Sante Fe, Argentina in the 1960s.
