A police dog is being remembered as a hero after she was killed Wednesday morning during a firefight with suspected ISIS militants in connection with the Paris terror attacks.

The Daily Mail reports Diesel, a 7-year-old Belgian Shepherd who is trained to detect explosives, was in the blast radius of a female suicide bomber, who came out of an apartment building firing an AK-47 at police before detonating her vest.

The Paris apartment was the target of a raid by dozens of police and soldiers. A suspect was dragged out of the apartment, which is in a neighborhood not far from Stade de France, the soccer stadium to which a would-be suicide bomber was denied entry. At least five police were injured and at least one other attacker was killed by a police sniper.

“It’s a little like losing one our colleagues,” one police handler said.

The Police Nationale Twitter post above called dogs like Diesel “indispensable” to police efforts.
