A stampede in an elementary school bathroom in China caused the deaths of two children and inflicted injuries upon 20 others. According to the BBC, students at Number Three Experimental Primary School in Puyang county were crowded into a bathroom during their morning break on Wednesday when others started pushing their way in, trampling over those already inside.

One student died on the way to the hospital, while another passed away after arriving. The injured students were also hospitalized with at least two in serious condition. While the cause of the incident remains under investigation, a parent of a student stated on social media that it happened after panic erupted when a bathroom wall collapsed.

Unfortunately, such incidents have been common in China, as a stampede near Shanghai’s riverfront during New Year celebrations in 2015 killed 36 people. Just one year prior, six children died and 25 others were injured during another school stampede in the southwest part of the country.

Video allegedly taken outside of the school following the tragic incident shows distraught parents and family members awaiting updates on the victims.
