Atlanta Nurses Fired for Mocking Expectant Moms on TikTok

This is why we keep business and pleasure separate. Four Atlanta nurses decided to participate in TikTok’s Ick Challenge. They made unprofessionally and downright mean complaints about patients in a maternity ward. The Emory University Midtown Hospital has since fired the nurses after their TikTok video went viral.

The Maternity Ward Nurses Complained About Everyone During Ick Challenge

The original TikTok video has since been deleted. But don’t worry, it’s all over the internet if you want to find it. The public was in an uproar after listening to a group of nurses lay down insults against those they were supposed to care for. They made fun of moms, dads, and pretty much anyone who ended up under their care.

Sure, everyone has a right to their own opinion. But if you’re willing to risk your job over a TikTok challenge, you should reconsider your priorities.

And that’s the problem. These nurses don’t seem to realize that one of their biggest priorities is patient welfare.

“My ‘Ick’ is when you ask me how much the baby weighs, and it’s still in your hands,” said one nurse.

“We’ve already told you to push a call light, but every 5 minutes, you have a family member coming to the front desk,” said another. Another nurse walks on-screen and chimes in, “Excuse me! Excuse me! Can I have some water? Excuse me, can I have a blanket?”

“When you’re going room-to-room between one baby mama and your other baby mama,” said another.

“My ‘Ick’ is when you come in for your induction, talking about, ‘Can I take a shower and eat?’“

The nasty stories ranged from complaints about mothers-to-be, new mothers, daddies-to-be, and pretty much anyone in general who needs anything in while at the hospital’s maternity ward.

Emory Nurses Were Fired After Public Outcry

As expected, people were upset. Some people took to TikTok to talk about their own personal experiences at Emory Hospital. Some of them had actually been patients of the nurses on the TikTok video. Thousands of calls for the nurses to be fired spread like wildfire.

TikToker Hepetty posted screenshots of previous patients of Emory Hospital.

One woman said she had undiagnosed postpartum preeclampsia. The Emory staff called her a hypochondriac until she was admitted to the ER. Another woman said she had delivered her child at Emory. When her mom went out to get medical staff because she was in pain, they brushed her off.

Emory Hospital did eventually fire the nurses. They also posted a statement to social media stating that they were aware of the TikTok video.

“This video does not represent our commitment to patient- and family-centered care and falls short of the values and standards we expect every member of our team to hold and demonstrate,” said the statement. “Every patient at Emory Healthcare deserves to be cared for by a compassionate, experienced team in a comfortable and safe environment.”
