The Scene

What investigators believe to be a “murder-suicide” pact unfurled on Sunday. Two officers were found dead in a Livonia home with a baby. The child was left uninjured.

Jesse E. White, a Detroit Police Chief, spoke on the matter in a video shared to the Detroit Police News Twitter feed.

“It’s a very tragic and sad course of events,” the chief stated, “It appears to be domestic. It looks like, preliminarily, a murder-suicide, and that’s where we are right now. It’s a sad day for our department, and thoughts and prayers go out to the family, as well as our officers who you can see over there that are taking it pretty hard, as are the rest of the command team.”

The Aftermath

Information surrounding the identity of the 22-year-old female and the 26-year-old male has yet to be released. They were involved in a relationship.

The bodies were discovered when a family member requested that the Livonia police perform a welfare check at the home. The authorities found the officers dead at the scene.

The cause of death for both officers appears to be gunshot wounds. The child is currently in the custody of a family member.

Murder-suicide is an act of desperation and despair and can leave families and communities in shock and grief. It is an all too common occurrence, and the ripple effects of such an act can be felt for generations.
