This is why you “don’t step on the cracks” or any kind of manhole cover, whatsoever. Camera footage of a little boy jovially stepping onto a well cover and falling 40 feet down will make anyone think twice about testing their luck.

Little Boy Falls 40 Feet After Into Well While Playing

A young boy was playing with his friend in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh State, India, when he had a terrifying accident last week. One boy rode around on his bicycle. Meanwhile, another stepped up onto a well covering and immediately plummeted out of sight. The boys were inside a building, with no adults around.

CCTV shared the horrifying footage. In the video, the boy is seen stepping up onto a board and then suddenly falling through the floor. His friend immediately leaves his bike, rushes over to the well, and looks down. The boys are heard calling to each other. It sounds like the boy who fell is whimpering. (Footage provided to New York Post via Jam Press).

Next, the video cuts to 4 adults and the boy’s friend standing around the well. A man finally goes down and gets the boy, hoisting him up to one of the women at the top. Fortunately, it’s clear that the boy can use his legs as he’s getting lifted out of his predicament. He could have easily broken some bones, rendering his legs unusable.

Pay Attention: Don’t Step on Manhole Covers!

While the video features a raised well in an indoor setting. While this is unusual for much of the western hemisphere, the message shouldn’t be ignored. Manholes and other boards are often placed irresponsibly. Further, they can be placed in a way that can seriously hurt you if you step on them.

I say this as a woman who has seen nearly 40 turns around the sun. I also once fell through a manhole! Luckily, it was only about 6 feet deep. I stepped onto a piece of board that was lying on the sidewalk as I was walking to a bus stop. I was talking to my mother on the phone at the time. All of a sudden, I fell 6 feet down, and miraculously landed on my feet. But the incident has traumatized me forever.

It really makes you think about all of those superstitions and wives’ tales. The whole, “don’t step on the crack” thing might actually have some reasoning behind it. Folks don’t test your luck if you see a piece of board covering a hole in the ground. Just walk around it — and teach your kids to, too!
