Graphic footage shows a man’s head crack a windshield as officers take him down during his arrest Meyer Lorain/Screenshot

Warning: Video is graphic

Disturbing dash cam video out of Lorain, Ohio, shows the brutal moment police officers slammed a man’s head down so forcefully onto a police cruiser that the windshield shattered.

Video obtained by WKYC Channel 3 News shows Pele Smith, 32, handcuffed and taken over to the cruiser before the awful moment in September 2014. Smith says Officer Zachary Ferenec used excessive force during the incident and claims a total of four officers were there at the time, three of which did not stop the act from happening.

Smith was treated for facial injuries at a nearby hospital and later filed a lawsuit against the officers involved.

“It’s unbelievable. It’s sad. It’s frightening that an individual while in handcuffs has something like that happen to them,” Mark Petroff, Smith’s attorney told WKYC.

“During the arrest and Mr. Smith’s active resistance, he was placed on the hood of the police unit to gain control and conduct a search, as per policy,” Lorain Police Chief Cel Rivera said in a statement on Wednesday, according to WKYC. “I would caution observers to not rush to judgment relative to the actions of the police on scene.”

In addition, Rivera called Smith “a violent drug trafficker.”

He went on to say that the video is “not easy to watch” and could be misinterpreted but that police reports explain exactly what happened.

Smith pleaded guilty to obstructing business, tampering with evidence and resisting arrest after the incident.
