Terrifying video has emerged of the moment the Fort Lauderdale airport gunman opened fire

The frightening moment the Fort Lauderdale airport shooter brandished his handgun and began his rampage that killed five people was caught on security video.

First obtained by TMZ, the video is 22 seconds long and shows Esteban Santiago, 26, strolling through the baggage claim area with a number of other people. He reaches into his waistband, grabs the gun and begins firing.

It takes a moment for people around him to process what is happening. With stunned looks on their faces, the people in the video scramble to take cover behind a rental cart machine.

One man, interviewed by NBC News in the video below, showed where a bullet from Santiago’s gun pierced his laptop, potentially saving his life.

Santiago, an Iraq War veteran, told investigators he traveled from Anchorage and planned the attack, according to NBC News. According to court documents, he purchased a one-way ticket from Anchorage to Fort Lauderdale. He packed the handgun and two magazines, and legally checked luggage.

Santiago told the FBI that after landing, he retrieved the checked handgun case from baggage claim, went into a bathroom and loaded the weapon. He tucked the gun into his waistband and exited the restroom.

He told investigators that he randomly opened fire, shooting the first people he saw when he left the restroom.
