There are clouds and then there are breaking wave clouds like this in Colorado Facebook/Screenshot

What’s the craziest cloud formation you’ve ever seen?

Residents in Colorado saw these amazing wave-lake clouds near the Breckenridge Ski Resort last Friday.

These clouds are known as Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds. “They are the atmospheric equivalent of those great breaking waves that you sometimes see on the ocean,” said Dr. Greg Forbes of The Weather Channel.

The clouds look the way they do because the top layer of air moves faster than the lower, causing the top layer to get scooped into a wave-like structure, ABC News reported.

Breckenridge Ski Resort is expected to open Nov. 13.
