The Daily Beast reports Princess Di claimed to have reliable sources that there would be a hit on her life. She told her lawyer, Victor Mischon, that she would be killed. She suspected it would be in a car accident and that it would be planned.
Then on August 31, 1997, Diana tragically died. She was in a car accident after her drunk and drugged chauffeur, Henri Paul crashed into a pillar. He was trying to escape a hoard of paparazzi on motorcycles when he crashed in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. Henry, Princess Di, and her friend, Dodi Al-Fayed, all passed away.
Princess Diana Paranoia
Mischon took note of what his client told him but assumed that she was being paranoid. Nonetheless, Mischon put the note in a safe so as to preserve it. Less than three weeks after Princess Diana’s death, he gave the note to the Metropolitan Police commissioner, Sir Paul Condon.
That note was eventually passed on to Sir Condon’s successor, Lord Stevens. When Lord Stevens assumed the role of commissioner, he was made aware of the note. He says that he was told that the note was not important. Even still, when he found out that the royal coroner was investigating Princes Di’s death many years later, Lord Stevens passed the note on to him.
Lord Stevens also followed up with Mischon on three separate occasions regarding the note.
“I interviewed Lord Mishcon on three occasions and took further statements on that letter, because it’s something that caused me great concern,” Lord Stevens explained. “I saw Lord Mishcon about a month before he died, in about the spring of 2005, and he held course to the fact that he thought she was paranoid, and he hadn’t held much credence to it. He was her solicitor, and remember, a solicitor has legal obligations to their clients. He was kind enough to make no mistake about it.”
Despite the fact that everyone was brushing off the note, Lord Stevens never stopped thinking that it held some importance.
In 2006, an 832-page report about an investigation into Princess Diana’s death, coined Operation Paget, was made public. Dodi Al-Fayed’s father’s lawyer, Michael Mansfield, said that the note was the most profound thing that came from the report.
“The most important thing about that report…was the Mischon Note.”
“The most important thing about that report, and the wait-a-minute moment, light shining through the darkness suddenly, was the Mishcon Note,” he said.
As it turns out, Princess Diana didn’t stop with the one warning to her attorney. In fact, she actually left another note which was later given to her butler, Paul Burrell. It was dated October 1996, just after Princess Di and Prince Charles divorced.
“I am sitting here at my desk today in October longing for someone to hug me and encourage me to keep strong and hold my head high,” Diana wrote. “This particular phase in my life is the most dangerous—my husband is planning ‘an accident’ in my car, brake failure and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry Tiggy.”
Burrell, like Mischon, dismissed Princess Diana’s concerns as paranoid. Princess Di had been fed lies about Prince Charles having an affair with his personal assistant, Tiggy Legge-Bourke. It was later found that the rumors were false, deliberately planted along with a faked abortion record. Still, it was enough to make the princess’s head spin.
Ultimately, it seems that Diana’s concerns—whether premonitions or actually fed to her by reliable but anonymous sources were somewhat true. However, Lord Stevens’s investigation concluded that the accident was not a conspiracy.
