Drew Barrymore Makes Dramatic Change To Her Latest Project

The Drew Barrymore Show is making some dramatic changes for its upcoming Season 3. Upon being renewed this past April, the show announced that its format was changing. But then it abruptly cancelled its taping for the new season premiere.

Ratings Aren’t Doing Too Hot

Some have speculated that the cancellation of the premiere—which was intended to be taped September 8—has roots in dwindling viewership. The Sun reported that Barrymore’s ratings have dropped. It estimated its viewership to be only 1/3rd of its daytime talkshow counterpart ABC’s Live with Kelly and Ryan. Barrymore’s show only garnered about half a million views per day during Season 2.

But spokespeople for The Drew Barrymore Show attributed the sudden morning studio taping cancellation to “production changes.” People with tickets to attend were sent an email with a code so they could reschedule with priority seating on another day. They were invited to come to the September 15 taping instead. But they were given the option of choosing another date as well.

“We apologize for the short notice and any inconvenience that this may cause to you and your party,” read the email.

The Drew Barrymore Show May Be Offered As Back-to-Back Episodes

In addition to suddenly cancelling the premiere’s taping, Barrymore’s talkshow is also testing out a formatting change this season. It will now release two episodes at a time. Networks will be given the option to air the weekly episodes back-to-back or to spread them out on different days or times. CBS Media Ventures is likely hoping to boost ratings by offering airtime flexibility through the new format.

Despite what seems to be a slew of struggles for The Drew Barrymore Show, there is still hope that the show can make a comeback. Guest stars this season will include Danny DeVito, Billy Eilish, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Machine Gun Kelly, Andy Cohen, Paris Hilton, and Tyler Perry. It’s hard to imagine that many of these guests won’t have a skyrocket effect on viewership.

The Drew Barrymore Show is scheduled to premiere on September 12 at 9 a.m. on CBS. You can click here to find your local station.
