Britney Spears’ struggles are too numerous to count, leading many to wonder if she is alienating herself with erratic behavior. But one of the most reliably supportive and empathetic celebrities in all of entertainment is behind her: Elton John.

In an interview with The Guardian published Thursday, John recalled his own struggles early in his career and how he relates to Spears going through her own set of problems.

“It’s hard when you’re young. Britney was broken. I was broken when I got sober. I was in a terrible place. I’ve been through that broken feeling and it’s horrible,” John said. And luckily enough, I’ve been sober for 32 years and it’s the happiest I’ve ever been. Now I’ve got the experience to be able to advise people and help them because I don’t want to see any artists in a dark place. A lot of artists, you’d think they’d have a lot of self-esteem but they don’t, and that’s why we go onstage and we get the applause, and then we come offstage and we’re back to square one.”

Elton John And Britney Spears’ Planned Collabo

Additionally, John revealed that he and Spears had planned a collaborative performance of his hit “Tiny Dancer” at her planned Las Vegas residency two years ago. John’s husband, David Furnish, suggested the partnership.

“I said, that’s a pretty amazing idea,” John said. “She hadn’t done anything for so long. I’d been following what’s been happening to her for a long time.”

That team-up never came to fruition. Spears canceled the residency and stopped working indefinitely around the same time. Then came the Framing Britney Spears documentary, the nude Instagram photos, the battles for custody over her children … the list goes on and on.

However, the two did pair up for a song, “Hold Me Closer,” announced Friday.

Meanwhile, Spears deleted her Instagram account this week after she accidentally posted a teaser of the song, Entertainment Tonight reports.

“You forget she was the biggest star in the whole world at that time,” John said. “And to see what happened to her makes me so angry. What happened to her shouldn’t have happened to anybody.”
