Emilia Clarke, ‘Mother of Dragons’ Reveals Aneurysm Experience, ‘Quite a Bit’ Of Her Brain Useless

Clarke said that it is a miracle that she can speak.

Emilia Clarke just sat down with BBC and spoke about some terrifying health ordeals. Apparently, “quite a bit” of her brain is “dead,” or unusable, after suffering from two brain aneurysms in her twenty’s. But the amazing thing is that she also considers herself to be completely unaffected these days. Clarke attributes this miraculous reality to the fact that we as humans actually only use very little of our brains in the first place.

“It’s remarkable that I am able to speak, sometimes articulately, and live my life completely normally with absolutely no repercussions,” the actress told BBC. (You can watch a clip via Metro, as the BBC video only plays in the UK).

The Mother of Dragons once wrote an essay for The New Yorker about her health scares. She wrote that her first aneurysm occurred soon after filming season 1 of Game of Thrones. She was only 24 years old at the time when she fell extremely ill. The year was 2011.

“There were no guarantees” — Emilia Clarke

“I was sent for an MRI, a brain scan,” wrote Clarke. “The diagnosis was quick and ominous: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain. I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture. As I later learned, about a third of SAH patients die immediately or soon thereafter. For the patients who do survive, urgent treatment is required to seal off the aneurysm, as there is a very high risk of a second, often fatal bleed. If I was to live and avoid terrible deficits, I would have to have urgent surgery. And, even then, there were no guarantees.”

A few years later, Clarke suffered from a second aneurysm. Again, she needed urgent surgery. That surgery left her with parts of her skull removed, replaced by titanium.

Emilia Clarke told BBC that, when a person suffers from an aneurysm, blood flow rediverts across the brain. When blood no longer runs through a certain part of the brain, that section of the brain immediately dies.

The Game of Thrones Queen also said that the HBO series gave her a sense of purpose, which ultimately helped her get through it all.
