A frequent Fox News commentator faces up to 35 years behind bars for making false statements to the government, and other alleged crimes.
Wayne Simmons was a recurring guest on Fox News, often weighing in on terrorism and national security-related subjects. He claimed to have nearly 30 years of experience as a CIA special operations officer. Simmons was arrested Thursday after being indicted by a federal grand jury on charges he lied about his background.
Fox News claims he only appeared as a non-paid guest and was not a contributor, although Simmons’ website notes he’s a “terrorism analyst” for Fox and includes numerous video clips of his appearances.
Simmons is accused of using the CIA claim to get security clearances and work as a defense contractor. He’s also implicated in a bogus real estate investment case that defrauded someone out of $125,000.
CNN reports that U.S. officials became suspicious of Simmons after receiving calls about his resume and claims made on his website.
