A shocking and devastating video is making its way online showing Georgia jailers punching an inmate inside a cell. According to authorities, a Georgia Sheriff had announced an investigation into the tragic incident that was recorded on the security video. The video shows five guards immediately swarming an inmate while inside a cell and punching him repeatedly in the head.
Camden County Sheriff Jim Proctor’s office ordered an immediate investigation into the incident which occurred on September 3rd. The incident involves five correction officers and inmate Jarrett Hobbs, 41.
Civil rights attorney Harry Daniels, who is representing Hobbs, decided to release the video to show the public. “It’s undeniable that Mr. Hobbs was approached by jailers and he was assaulted, punched multiple times in the back of his head, kneed in his head and dragged out of his cell,” Daniels stated. “This is a brutal beating, a brutal attack.”
The video starts off by showing Hobbs alone in his cell turning towards the bed in order to pick up some objects. According to the attorney, they were a piece of paper and a sandwich. That’s when a guard rushed into his cell and grabbed him around the neck trying to push him into the corner. That’s when 4 other officers come in behind him.
Five Jail Guards Beat Black Man in Cell
The men can be seen trying to hold Hobbs down against the wall when one of them starts to punch him in the back of the head and neck. The video also shows at least two other guards punching him repeatedly. A second video from a camera outside of the cell shows the jailer dragging Hobbs through the door. He then quickly hurls him against the wall. One guard can then be seen raising his knee and foot, which is still unclear whether or not he struck the inmates.
The struggle quickly continues until Hobbs appears to be pinned to the ground. The entire terrifying confrontation lasted around a minute. According to a judge’s order, a probation officer went to testify that Hobbes had “punched one deputy in the face while punching another deputy in the side of the head. One deputy sustained a bruised eye and a broken hand as a result of the incident.” They also noted that the inmate was punched in the head and that the probation officer was “unaware of the exact sequence of events.”
It is still unclear to what extent the inmate fought the men. In most of the video, he is seen obscured by guards that are surrounding him. Hobbs had originally been booked for traffic violations and drug possession charges back on September 3rd. He was then charged with fighting the deputies that same day he was arrested.
The sheriff’s office has yet to release details about the jailers involved.
