‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Is Upping The Sex Scenes

Sex still sells. At least at HBO.

In the event you thought there was a lot of sex in Games of Thrones, just wait until you get a load of the prequel.

Even Matt Smith, star of HBO’s House of Dragon, said there may even be too much, uh, intimacy going on.

“You do find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?'” Smith told Rolling Stone. “And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we do.'”

Ok then.

It’s hard to imagine a show having more sex scenes than Game of Thrones. Smith said it likely all comes down to staying true to the books by George R.R. Martin.

“I guess you have to ask yourself: ‘What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?’ And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written.” Smith said.

When asked if thought that maybe there were too many sex scenes in House of Dragon, Smith laughed.

“Yeah, I do,” he said, per Rolling Stone.

There is one big difference this time…

That said, the sex scenes in House of Dragon are a bit different than Game of Thrones. Mostly, in that those in the latter aren’t always consensual. Not so this time.

“I’d like to clarify that we do not depict sexual violence in the show,” executive producer Sara Hess told Vanity Fair. “We handle one instance off-screen, and instead show the aftermath and impact on the victim and the mother of the perpetrator.”

“We don’t shy away from the fact that our female leads in the first half of the show are coerced and manipulated into doing the will of adult men.

“This is done not necessarily by those we would define as rapists or abusers, but often by generally well-meaning men who are unable to see that what they are doing is traumatic and oppressive, because the system that they all live in normalizes it. It’s less obvious than rape but just as insidious, though in a different way.”

House of Dragon is set to make its debut on Sunday, August 21.
