Alec Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, has opened up about the terrible Rust shooting that happened just over a year ago. In an interview with Extra, Hilaria admitted that every day is still hard for their family. “We’re not okay,” she said.

Alec Baldwin Accidentally Fatally Shot Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021 Rust Shooting

On October 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin was caught up in an accidental shooting on the set of a Western film, Rust. He was rehearsing with a .45 Colt revolver replica, which should have been empty. However, for reasons not yet understood, a bullet shot forward toward the camera lens that Alec was supposed to be pointing at. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot in the chest and director Joel Souza was injured. The incident occurred at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Bonanza City, New Mexico.

Accusations were hurled in every direction after the shooting. Rust’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, sued the ammo dealer for sending live ammo. Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney, Jason Bowles, said that someone may have sabotaged the film by leaving live dummy rounds, stating that disgruntled employees had walked off set the day before. Assistant director David Halls’ attorney claimed that his client didn’t hand Baldwin the gun despite a detective’s affidavit stating otherwise.

Numerous Executive Crew Members Had Shaky Safety Protocol Histories

What’s more, a Rust crew member told Variety that Halls had a record of being reckless with set safety on another film production. Halls had previously been fired while filming Freedom’s Path in 2019. He was fired after a prop gun unexpectedly discharged, injuring a crew member. And Gutierrez-Reed had allegedly also once been reckless with her handling of firearms. She once upset Nicolas Cage on the set of The Old Way, causing him to walk off.

The Rust production company was ultimately fined by New Mexico’s Occupational Health and Safety Bureau for firearms safety failures and violation of standard protocols.

Hutchins’ family settled a wrongful death lawsuit and her husband, Matthew Hutchins, was put in the role of executive producer. Rust filming was originally put on hold indefinitely, at least during investigations, but will resume filming in January 2023 to honor Halyna.

Alec Baldwin Bore Brunt of the Blame Due to Being in Public Eye, Holding the Gun

Regardless of who exactly was responsible for the loaded gun, much of the public has deemed the fault to be Alec Baldwin’s. He, after all, was the one holding it when it went off. Making matters worse, he’s denied ever pulling the trigger. He’s continued his denial even after the FBI determined that he did in fact pull the trigger. It should be noted, however, that the incident was still deemed an accident.

Alec Baldwin has repeatedly expressed deep remorse over the accident. It’s clear that he feels terrible, even though he wasn’t the person ultimately responsible for loading the prop gun that was handed to him during the rehearsal. But even when Alec has expressed remorse for or commemorated the late Halyna Hutchins, he gets torn up by public commentary. The backlash has affected the entire Baldwin family.

Hilaria Baldwin Says Every Day Is Hard for Their Heartbroken Family

“We’re not okay. We can’t be okay,” Hilaria Baldwin told Extra about her family’s heartbreak. “No one is okay. It was, and is, a tragedy that nobody could ever have imagined. I mean, the loss of her, Halyna. Her son, a little son, her family, her co-workers, the people who loved her, her fans. I mean, she was an incredible, incredible woman in so many different ways.” Halyna left behind a son, Andros, who was 9 years old at the time.

Hilaria said that she’s stood by her husband’s side but that every day has been hard.

“When you go through something hard, you know not every day is going to be the same,” she told Extra. “You have moments in the day that are very hard. Nights are hard, nightmares are hard. So, I’m just there, and I say, ‘I’m here and I’m going to take care of you,’ and I said that from the moment we realized what had happened.”

She also said that it was challenging explaining what had happened to their two oldest children, Carmen and Rafael. Carmen and Rafael are 9 and 7, respectively. Hilaria and Alec Baldwin have 7 children together, one of who was carried by a surrogate.

“There is no way that you can explain this because it is awful. It’s awful!” Hilaria said. “I thought I was going to do this without Alec, and he said, ‘No, I can’t be a coward. I have to be there…’ And then when I tell them… Carmen started saying to me, ‘Why are you telling me this?… She said, ‘I want to un-know this.’ She used the word ‘un-know,’ and Alec said, ‘I want to un-know it, too,’ I think everyone wants to un-know it… because it’s real.”

Hilaria Hopes Film Set Gun Safety Can Be Addressed and Halyna Can Be Honored

Hilaria added that she thinks it’s important to move forward. She said that two things that need to happen are conversations about gun safety on sets and honoring the late Halyna Hutchins. Hilaria also told Extra that she intends to address online bullying on her podcast, Witches Anonymous.

“Understanding we are so much more similar than we are different and if we get together and we communicate we don’t have to be on extreme sides,” Hilaria said.
