Because the Pit Bull, Cranberry, was microchipped it led authorities right to 33-year-old Michael Long, who adopted the dog months before.
Investigators say this police officer stuffed his dog inside a trash bag and abandoned her in a park. More: https://t.co/3asfzrxD8g #ABC13 pic.twitter.com/CWPkUhAbnl

According to WPVI, Barbara Adams and her Springer Spaniel, Sansom, were out for a walk Nov. 23, 2016, when her dog started tugging at her.
She said the dog was hunched over and looking intently at the trash bag.
“I was actually looking out over the woods. When I turned around, my dog was hunched down and looking at a trash bag,” said Adams. “I was absolutely horrified, more horrified when I opened the bag and saw the condition that was she was in.”
Cranberry, who was emaciated and on the verge of death, had her nose sticking out of the trash bag.
“It is very disappointing to hear that this was a Philadelphia police officer that did this,” she added. “I’m happy that I was able to help save her.”
She said Sansom has earned a lot of treats.
The good news is that Cranberry was saved just in time and after months of recovery is healthy and happy.

“For somebody like that to be actually perpetrating the crime is something that really gets to me,” Nicole Wilson of the Pennsylvania SPCA said. “She was immediately hooked up to IVs, and it took a significant amount of time to be able to rehabilitate her.”
Wilson said that after being led to Long’s home by the microchip, more evidence that the dog was his was discovered.
“We then recovered additional evidence inside his home that actually linked the items that were found with Cranberry back to that home,” she said.
