Hyundai Recalling Nearly 250K Cars With Exploding Seatbelt Risk

Hyundai has issued a recall of 239,000 vehicles nationwide out of an abundance of concern that certain seat belt parts could explode, sending metal fragments into the cabin of the vehicle.

The recall affects Accents in model years 2019-2022, Elantras made in 2021-2023, and Elantra hybrid vehicles that are from 2021-2022, according to the NHTSA safety recall report.

It read that for approximately 61,000 2019-2022 model year Accent vehicles produced within the specified production date range by Kia Motor Mexico (“KMX”) for sale in the U.S. The total recall population was determined based on manufacturing records of vehicles equipped with the subject pretensioners including those previously involved in Recalls 219 and 223.

Adding that approximately 166,000 2021-2023 model year Elantra vehicles produced within the specified production date range by Hyundai Motor Company (“HMC”) and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (“HMMA”) for sale in the U.S. The total recall population was determined based on manufacturing records of vehicles equipped with the subject pretensioners including those previously involved in Recalls 211, 220, and 223.

And that approximately 12,000 2021-2022 model year Elantra HEV vehicles produced within the specified production date range by Hyundai Motor Company (“HMC”) for sale in the U.S. The total recall population was determined based on manufacturing records of vehicles equipped with the subject pretensioners including those previously involved in Recalls 211 and 220.

What Can You Do To Get It Fixed?

Owners have been instructed to bring their vehicles to Hyundai dealerships (for free) and their mechanics will attach a cap to the pretensioners, which lock the seatbelt in place during a crash.

Hyundai will begin to notify owners via mail by July 15, the NHTSA said. Hyundai said that it is still investigating the root cause of the issue.
