Biden, 79, is experiencing “very mild” symptoms, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. He is taking antiviral drug Paxlovid to help alleviate those symptoms, she added.

Biden’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, said in a letter that the president’s symptoms include fatigue, a runny nose and the occasional dry cough. O’Connor added he expects Biden to respond well to the prescription, “as most maximally protected patients do.”

Biden will continue to work, though he will remain in isolation until a negative test. The White House will provide daily updates on his condition.

“While Biden’s vaccinations should protect him against serious illness, the infection is a blow to the administration’s efforts to show the president is on top of the pandemic that has disrupted the country for more than two years,” USA TODAY wrote.

Biden tested negative on Tuesday, just two days before the positive test result, Jean-Pierre said.

First lady Jill Biden is visiting Detroit and tested negative. She said the president is “feeling good” and she herself intends to continue masking and practicing social distancing.

“Biden returned Sunday from a four-day trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia, where officials said in advance he would try to ‘minimize contact’ because of the rise in COVID variants,” USA TODAY noted.
