Keanu Reeves has been a dedicated actor since he was quite young. The list of productions under his belt seems never-ending. His films have collectively grossed a whopping $4.6 billion at the box office worldwide. One of the most successful actors in the world, Keanu Reeves’ net worth today is an excellent, most triumphant $380 million.
Keanu Reeves’ Humble Beginnings
Keanu was born in Beirut on September 2, 1964. His mother was from England and his father was from Hawaii. When his father abandoned them when Keanu was only 3 years old, he and his mother migrated to Australia, then New York, eventually settling in Toronto, Canada.
Keanu seemed to struggle with school, often getting expelled. He suffered from behavioral problems as well as dyslexia. Originally passionate about ice hockey, his preferences switched to acting at age 15. He attended Avondale Secondary Alternative School, where he could focus on acting and academics simultaneously, until he dropped out at age 17. Because his stepfather was from the United States, Keanu obtained a green card and moved to Los Angeles at age 20.
Keanu’s Early Television Career
Before moving to California, Keanu dabbled in television. He was in a Coca-Cola commercial in 1983 and a correspondent for a youth television program on CBC the following year. Keanu played Mercutio in a theatrical production of Romeo and Juliet in 1985. He told Parade that he got an agent from his Shakespeare role.
“I was basically paying for my life by the time I was 18,” Keanu told Parade.
In 1986, Keanu played Heaver in Young Blood, his first appearance on the big screen. He only made about $3,000 for the role.
That same year, Keanu landed a starring role as Matt in River’s Edge. While the film didn’t make a ton of money ($4.6 million at the box office), it got Keanu noticed.
Keanu Takes Off
Keanu first became a household name when Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure came out in 1989. Playing Ted, he made $95,000. The film led to two sequels as well as a 13-episode TV series.
In 1994, Keanu played Jack Traven in Speed, earning about $1.2 million. The following year, he made $2 million playing the title role in Johnny Mnemonic. In 1997, Keanu made $8 million playing Kevin Lomax in The Devil’s Advocate.
The Matrix was released in 1999, and it was at this point that Keanu was most definitely set for life. He made $15 just for filming on top of box office grosses. The first Matrix film brought in $465,974,198 at the box office worldwide.
The Matrix franchise has had four films to date, with the fourth coming out last year. Estimated gross revenue from the first three movies alone is more than $3 billion worldwide. Parade estimates that Keanu made about $250 million from the first three Matrix films. Variety reports that Keanu’s salary for the fourth Matrix film is between $12 and $14 million. But that doesn’t include box office grosses and whatever he makes from HBO Max.
Starring in yet another franchise, Keanu has played the starring role in four John Wick movies. The fourth is set to come out in 2023. He made between $1-2 million for the first film and between $2-2.5 million each for the second and third. However, he also negotiated part ownership of the franchise once he got to the first sequel. So, let’s just say, Keanu Reeves is sitting pretty with the John Wick series.
